Is there something beyond surviving cancer? What would it look like to pursue joy, beauty, and passion after breast cancer? Upon returning from our Fall 2023 trip to France, I continue to pursue joy, even though I won’t be speaking French as much as I was on vacation.

If you are facing imaging and feeling anxious- you are not alone! Many of us contend with scanxiety, whether we are heading into imaging or another doctor’s appointment. As I approach my mammograms, I do some things to plan for and live with the scanxiety. I’ve been through these anxious times before, so I wanted to be proactive rather than reactive.

Every time I got in the shower, it yelled at me. The scum on the tiles, the grime in the grout lines, and the water spots on the door spoke words of worthlessness. “You’re not good enough. You don’t deserve to have a clean shower. You’re a terrible housecleaner.” I would close my eyes, breathe in the rose-scented soap, and try to ignore them.

As a mom of two, I thought that I understood fatigue, especially since my first son didn’t sleep through the night until he was 14 months old. However, I was completely unprepared for the fatigue that came with my breast cancer diagnosis. This was not exhaustion fixed by napping in the afternoon or going to bed early. It was more than physical fatigue. I was exhausted mentally and emotionally, as well.

I have a confession to make. I am an anxious traveler. There, I said it. Beneath the smiling faces I share in the photos, there can be an undercurrent of panic and anxiety. Sometimes I think I like the idea of traveling rather than the actual traveling part. I’m especially prone to pre-vacation panic.
